Anticipated Growth of CO2 Refrigeration Systems

sarah36902

Driving the Shift to HFC-Free Refrigerants in U.S. Food Retailers Regulations and environmental and social governance (ESG) factors have spurred the move away from traditional high global warming potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. As a result, more and more U.S. food retailers are seeking out HFC-free alternatives to future-proof their operations.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a natural refrigerant that is non-toxic, non-flammable, and has a very low GWP, making it an excellent alternative to HFCs. This has made it one of the top alternative refrigerants for companies looking to make the shift.

The North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) conducted a survey of 13 major U.S. food retailers in 2023. These companies represent over 18,000 store locations, and the survey aimed to determine both current and future demand for CO2 refrigeration systems.

Key Takeaways:

Thank you to the NASRC, a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit, working to advance climate-friendly natural refrigerants and reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by traditional HFC refrigerants. We collaborate with stakeholders from across the industry, including over 55,000 food retail locations, to eliminate the barriers to natural refrigerants in supermarkets
